Union Pacific Railroad last week announced that it sold 33 miles of its track north of Denver to Colorado’s Regional Transportation District for a new commuter rail line.
Union Pacific retained a right to share eight miles of the track under what it calls its Boulder Industrial Lead.
The $118 million track sale was the first of four land transfers needed for the Denver RTD to develop the “FasTracks” commuter rail line, which would run from Denver north to Boulder.
Other planned deals would give the RTD 10 more miles of Union Pacific’s track. Denver transit officials say they need to own the track so they can electrify it for their own trains. Construction on the commuter rail line is scheduled for completion by 2017.
The RTD agreed to relocate Union Pacific tracks in places where the railroad wants to continue its freight rail service.
